Brief description:
Telecommunications encompass the transmission of voice, data, video, and multimedia through local and wide area networks. With the convergence of computing, communications, and content, businesses and organizations all over the world seek to enhance their effectiveness through telecommunications.
This course aims to analyze how telecommunications can be employed to enhance benefit and reduce costs throughout the value web. It begins from the basic economics of technology to consider the technologies of voice, data, video, and multimedia, local and wide area networks, and fixed line and wireless transmission. The course emphasizes practical management through relevant examples and case studies. However, it is not a technical course in implementation.
Using the foundation of economics and technology, the course presents a framework for network strategy. The framework is applied to Internet commerce and network strategies in particular industries including banking and finance, logistics, and transportation. The course concludes with a discussion of national and international policy, with special attention to the implications of convergence.
