Prof Akkihebbal L ANANDA

Prof Ananda was one of the key players in developing the NUS’ campus secure plug-and-play network. His research areas of interest include end-to-end performance of transport protocols, interoperability issues between IPv4 and IPv6, and distributed systems.

Assoc Prof Norman Hugh ANDERSON

Assoc Prof Anderson’s interests include compiler design, functional languages, operating systems, datacomms, software verification and validation, distributed and parallel computing, among other areas.
ANG Cheng Lian

Cheng Lian, since School of Computing’s inception in 1998, played a pivotal role in supporting the Department’s first four Heads (Kwok Kee, Bernard, Hock Hai, and Jungpil) and various committees. Her dedication extended to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship effort, where she was cherished for her willingness to learn, collaborate and build relationships. Many student startups will fondly remember her.

Dr ANG Chuan Heng

Dr Ang’s research areas include image manipulation, B-trees, data structures, among others. His publications span from 1989 to 2010.

Assoc Prof CHAN Sing Chai

Assoc Prof Ho was involved in a research which used Case-based Reasoning and other techniques such as data mining and natural language processing to predict the recurrence of colorectal cancer.

Assoc Prof Hsu was the first director of the Lee Kong Chian Computer Centre at Nanyang University, and subsequently inaugural Head of the Department of Computer Science at its Faculty of Science in 1975.

Assoc Prof Jarzabek’s areas of interest include software engineering project courses. He believes that the role of a university is to teach students fundamental concepts, and not over emphasise specific technologies that are rapidly changing.

Friendly, approachable and well-liked by staff and students, Madam Koh is one of the pioneers of the School. She coordinated the practical exams and computer-account creation for many years. Before her retirement, she switched over to SoC Building Facilities for three years.
Assoc Prof LEONG Hon Wai

Assoc Prof Leong was Division Head for Computer Science in DISCS and Assistant Dean for Special Programmes at SoC. His research interest is in the design of efficient algorithms to solve computational problems in areas such as VLSI-CAD, transportation logistics, multimedia systems, and computational biology.

LEONG Wai Kin

Wai Kin, the first technician in the Department of Computer Science in 1983, helped grow a one-man workshop into a 30-person technical unit over 41 years. His leadership, calm demeanor, and customer-focused approach has been instrumental in the School of Computing’s growth. He will be greatly missed for his wisdom and knowledge.

Prof Ling was Head of IT Division, Deputy Head of DISCS, and Vice Dean of SoC. His research interest is in database. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, IEEE Life Senior Member, and Fellow of Singapore Computer Society.
Assoc Prof LOE Kia Fock

Assoc Prof Loe pursued research in the areas of machine learning on artificial intelligence systems, high performance computers and geometric modelling.

Assoc Prof LUA Kim Teng

Years of service: 1980 – 2003
Assoc Prof Lua taught microprocessor and its operating system, and set up the microprocessor hardware lab. He then ventured into multilingual processing and natural language processing and formed the Chinese and Oriental Languages Processing Society in 1988. He also set up the International Conference of Asian Languages conference series and a journal of the same name.

Ms Ng was a core member of the SoC Building Facilities team. She was known to be capable in handling furniture and building repair work, instead of engaging vendors, to reduce unnecessary downtime and inconvenience to users.

Assoc Prof Poo’s subject interests include network and routing protocols, neural networks, signal processing systems, file system management, among others.
Assoc Prof PUNG Hung Keng

Assoc Prof Pung taught courses in mobile and multimedia networking, and advanced topics in networking at senior undergraduate and graduate levels respectively. His areas of research covered MAC protocols, distributed systems design, wireless and multimedia networking and quality of service management, context-aware systems and ubiquitous pervasive computing.
Venkata K RAO

Mr Rao’s research interests include information systems evaluation, decision support systems, and business computer graphics. He is the author of three books, and has also published nearly 50 papers in professional journals and conference proceedings.

Prof Alex SIOW

Professor Alex Siow was a highly accomplished IT senior leader in the industry and Singapore’s first Chief Information Officer at HDB.

Having served from 2001 to 2024 as a Professor of Practice in SOC and DISA, the Director of the Advanced Computing for Executives (ACE), Strategic Technology Management Institute (STMI) and Centre for Healthcare Informatics (CHI), he played a pivotal leadership role in educating students, IT professionals and business leaders in the areas of IT strategy and governance, digital innovation and transformation, and digital government.

He also served as the Chairperson of our School’s Industry Advisory Committee from the years 2001 to 2010.

Prof Ken SUNG Wing Kin

Prof Sung’s research areas are in algorithms and bioinformatics. He was a senior group leader at the Genome Institute of Singapore.
Prof TAN Chew Lim

Prof Tan taught artificial intelligence and AI related courses. His research interests included document image analysis, natural language processing and medical computing. He had also co-authored a book entitled “Video Text Detection”.

In her 24 years of dedicated service, Poh Suan pleasantly carried out her duties in assisting faculty members in grant call submissions, award nominations, as well as provided support to the Vice-Dean of Research. A key member of the VDR Office, Poh Suan takes on every duty with enthusiasm.

Assoc Prof Teh’s research interests include physically based modelling, realistic image synthesis, volume visualisation, microcomputer systems and applications. He taught introductory courses in computer graphics and microcomputer systems.
Prof P. S. THIAGARAJAN

Prof Thiagarajan pursued a variety of topics in computer science. He later turned to computational systems biology and worked with biologists to develop probabilistic approximation techniques for analysing high dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations as well as hybrid system models of biopathways.

Prof WEI Kwok Kee

Prof Wei was the founding Head of the Department of Information Systems (IS). He developed a strong research culture and initiated major research efforts that resulted in a top 15 placing worldwide for the IS department. He also introduced curriculum reforms that raised the international value of the degree programmes.

Assoc Prof Yeo’s two major areas of research were in Structured Modeling, a hybrid of data structures and operations research; and Educational Gaming. She believed in learning through activities and used a simulation gaming environment, MAGNUS, to support her teaching in Decision Support Systems for many years.
