7 March 2018 – Third year Information Security student Jeremy Heng won the Student Award at the inaugural Cybersecurity Awards 2018 on 23 February.
Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Cyber Security Dr Yaacob Ibrahim presented the awards at the ceremony held at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Six individuals and organisations were commended for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Singapore’s information security industry and community. Jeremy emerged as winner among three finalists for the student category.
The Student Award is presented to an outstanding tertiary student who has contributed or volunteered in the area of information security, competed in information security competitions or challenges, and demonstrated a passion in the field.
As vice-president of the NUS Greyhats, a student interest group in NUS Computing, Jeremy has been actively involved in organising workshops and talks on cybersecurity for NUS students. He has also participated in multiple information security ‘capture-the-flag’ competitions, at both the local and international levels. He won first place in the 2016 and 2017 Singapore Cyber Conquest competitions, and he represented Singapore in the ASEAN Cyber Seas Games 2017, where his team came in second place.
In his personal time, Jeremy has been conducting independent vulnerability research. His security findings have been widely used in software such as Apache Mesos, MuPDF, GraphicsMagick, and a few cryptocurrencies. Jeremy alludes to his internship with Apple’s ISO Security team for kick starting his interest in securing open source projects.
“It was an empowering yet humbling experience to be recognised for the work I’ve been involved with for the past eight years,” said Jeremy.
“I would like to express my deep gratitude to Prof Liang Zhenkai for supporting me throughout the past three years and the Student Life team for helping me with the award’s nomination process. My thanks to Ryan Baxendale of Centurion Information Security, and my longtime friend, for being the first to urge me on for the award, the boys back at Apple for being really great people, and the NUS Greyhats who have been my family for the entirety of my University life.”
The Cybersecurity Awards was organised by the Association of Information Security Professionals (AISP) and is supported by the Cybersecurity Agency.
