22 June 2020 – A team of alumni from the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) won first place and a S$5,000 cash prize at the finals of the NUS-EMC Innovation Challenge, held online on 28 April 2020.

Team Stellar (Stella Yi, Joshua Toh, Bertand Xiao, Tay Jun Liang, Wee Li Yen, and Steven Tseng) were among eight teams that made the finals of the challenge, which was co-hosted by the NUS Business Analytics Centre (BAC) and Energy Market Company (EMC).

Over five weeks, a total of 19 teams had to develop a Uniform Singapore Energy Price forecasting model and market information dashboard using datasets, artificial intelligence, as well as other predictive analytics to improve the accuracy of energy price forecasts.

Their ideas were assessed by a panel of seven judges from BAC and EMC, based on criteria such as creativity, feasibility, and reliability.

Team Stellar developed a comprehensive market information dashboard with natural language generation capability to generate commentaries. The dashboard also featured a natural language processing programme to retrieve relevant news from the internet.

EMC Chief Operating Officer Lim Chew said: “It’s really impressive to see such high quality work delivered in such a short span of time.”

“We’ve learnt quite a fair bit from our participants, gained different perspectives on interpreting the data and operating the dashboards. It was a great learning opportunity for EMC,” Mr Chew added.

Associate Professor James Pang, co-director of BAC, said: “This was NUS’ first collaboration with EMC, and we look forward to future collaborations with them.”
