STUDENTS' COMMENT ON OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF MODULE CONTENT

Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Academic Year:  2013/2014
Department:  COMPUTER SCIENCE Semester:  3
Module:  PROGRAMMING METHODOLOGY - CS1010FC

Please provide your comments on any aspect of the module or online platform in the space below. In particular, please tell us more about your experience with the online parts of the module; and let us have your suggestions on how we can improve the teaching in the module, both online and in the classroom. (17 Comments)
1Allow students to attend WebEx sessions from mobile devices, e.g. tablets, as it is currently not supported. Coursemology is a good platform to motivate students to continually submit assignments on time, and for students to seek guidance from the lecturer/tutors and peers.
2Because SoC runs on its own in-house platform, Coursemology, that has been specifically catered to this course, I must say the online platform is wonderful for the course. Coursera is just a platform for distributing video lectures, and it does its job well so I have no complaints against it.
3Coursemology is perfect for an online module. The entire span of the module is slightly too long for a module that was ongoing every week.
4Coursera had problems with the loading of videos. The difficulty of the exams was much higher than that of pass semesters and this is only a basic course, so it should not be as difficult as it currently is. This module used the Coursemology platform which is more engaging unlike coursera.
5Coursera videos sometimes fail to play after pausing, and have to be restarted
6I felt that the tutors and prof in this module are very involved and are more than willing to help the students out.
7I really liked how programming used another online platform called coursemology and it was really intuitive and helpful to learning. From experience from other iMOOC's, their use of coursera isn't really well coordinated and at times it is hard to find links to the quizzes or assignments.

10The coursemology interface seems to be more efficient as compared to using coursera as i have heard form my friends taking other IMOOCS, but I've not been using coursera except to download videos so I do not have much comments
11The lecture videos/slides can be improved. I understand the instructor's intent to clear our doubts during in-class lessons but when we are trying to revise on our own, the intentionally left vague videos/slides can really impede our revision.
12The online parts of the modules were good, as it is really up to us to plan our schedule. I really appreciate the recorded lectures/recitations the lecturers made an effort to host and upload.
13The use of the Coursemology platform to provide instant feedback is excellent! The online engagement effort is also good, with announcements being sent to our emails instead of merely being posted on the coursera page.
14There was a lot of help provided(forums, webex remedials), which is unlike what you normally see in other IMOOCS which is definitely helpful to those who just started programming as well as those who are stuck in camp while they are still in NS. While the videos are short and concise, of course nothing beats being lectured in class by Prof Ben.
15This module uses coursemology instead of coursera. I'll say the online lectures are good, but there can be times where I watch the video & have no idea what Prof Ben is saying. That however is how the lectures were meant to be (at least according to Prof Ben), so.... Anyway I think it's a useful way to for NSmen to adjust back to student life. Submission of work online is smooth. There were also tutorials conducted online. We were able to discuss through voice chats & annotate for the whole class to see. In my opinion, these tutorials provided convenience for the students but is unable to replicate physical tutorials fully. There's just that face-to-face interaction that cannot be done online. I'll say the online tutorials were effective, but not as good as physical ones.
16This platform for online learning is very well managed and it is almost seemless to students. However, there are instances where the platform could not handle high traffic and might be due to the server. Some of these could not be helped. In general, I felt that most of the factors that can be managed are well thought through and have been managed well.
17While streaming from coursera, videos often crash. Coursera itself isn't a very good platform to discuss / work on.
