2. Being able to engage the class, showing care and concern.
3. Candid attitude, building relations with the students to understand them better. Really appreciate how he constantly asks each student if they are working, still in army, holiday, etc and adjusts the pace of the course accordingly.
4. Creative and cool | |
5. Engaging speaker, competent and has a strong passion in teaching.
6. Great teacher with very good teaching methods.
7. He connects on a personal level, teaches with passion & with clarity. Most importantly, he inspires students to learn not just for the sake of learning, but really to learn with passion.
8. He emphasizes the importance of independent learning and putting in extra effort to learn a new subject matter which prepares us for university. He is a master in his field and encourages us to strive to do our assignments well.
9. He is a very patient and helpful tutor. He provides prompt feedback and is able to connect with us. He is able to get our attention and make us interested in the subject to want to learn more and actually do the work
10. He is able to emphasize learning on top of getting the right answer.
He challenges our creativity by coming up with creative solutions and teaching us how to be creative
He is able to individually engage each student
Knows each student individually, sometimes better than the tutors.
11. He is an enthusiastic teacher who engages the students well
12. He is inspiring, witty, humorous and engaging.
13. He is very funny and interesting. He teaches with a lively pace and has alot of passion in teaching.
14. He was able to deliver the subject content well and his live presentations were interesting.
15. His teaching methods are very effective and his use of coursemology for this module makes learning more fun.
16. Humor the class and make the class exciting to go to. Making us feel the wanting to learn.
17. Interesting and able to help us students tackle the problem from another perspective.
18. Making learning fun
19. Outstanding and inspiring from the first video lecture to the final lecture he delivered to us right after our practical exam. He is extremely approachable and flexible. He makes learning interesting, encouraging it through games and competitions. He manages to engage the attention of the entire class during all recitations / lectures. At the end of everything, he even shared honest life advice, which I treasure dearly. He makes learning to code a joy, and learning in general a joy.
20. Prof Ben is engaging and the structure of this Imooc modules has been made interesting through online game-like ideas
21. Prof Ben made the wise decision in choosing Python as the first language to start for basics in programmming. Since it is like what he said, it's important to learn the basics and then apply to other languages rather than learning the language specific stuff per se. Also Prof Ben ensures no man were left behind and have organised/provided a lot of help both online and offline which a lot of students appreciated the extra help given.
22. Teaches the students on critical thinking and the overall idea of learning computer programming.
23. Very creative and put alot of efforts in his teachings. One of the enthu lecturers ive seen. Truly enjoys what he's doing . Kudos! Guides us not only academically but also in real life.
24. Very engaging, which helps to reduce the "dryness" of the subject.
Sharing of life experiences with students and acting as a coach/mentor to students instead of just a lecturer.
25. Very inspiring and good at what he is doing. |
What improvements would you suggest to the Instructor? (20 comments)
1. -Nil- | |
2. Articulating of abstract thoughts or concepts can be improved, though in general we have no difficulty understanding what the professor is teaching or lecturing.
3. Can be rather hasty and brief in explanations, need to slow down and be more detailed with the explanations.
4. Continue staying cool.
5. Go a bit slower and don't expect everyone to understand straight away.
6. He can afford to improve the way he speaks.
7. His creativeness in crafting questions is out of this world. Perhaps you can tone it down a little? While yes this will force us to think and possibly improve on out thinking level, it does cause a lot of suffering in this course.
8. In the initial stage of the course, it was difficult for students to catch up with the coursework because of the lack of background in programming. Although help was provided, I think this was the reason many students dropped the course.

14. Nope, Prof Ben is a great Instructor!
15. Online lectures are a little too fast, and could be slowed down
16. Sometimes the way he teach, only his level of knowledge can understand. For us students, he must lower his thinking skills and see how we students see the problem and from there, guide us to think more efficiently.
17. Sometimes, may get carried away with exploring new concepts that weaker students may get left behind.
18. You're doing an awesome job! Please continue to do what you're already doing! :-)
19. keep up the good work prof!

1. | A very competent teacher that cares for his students and goes out of his way in teaching |
2. | An excellent lecturer and professor. Imparts more than just knowledge in the field, but also life lessons. |
3. | As my first professor teaching me Computer Science, he has definitely get us to be more excited about learning CS even before school begin. How cool is that? Also it has definitely prepare us better for our future life in NUS when August comes. |
4. | Can really see his passion in teaching, caring for his students and not just treating them as just another class of students to teach. |
5. | Cool and interesting professor. |
6. | Dr Ben not only teaches us essential skills in programming, he also teaches us invaluable life lessons. His lecture, during which he talks about his past experiences as well as his beliefs in life, is very helpful to me. |
7. | Even though it's a FC module, Prof Ben takes the effort to learn how to use WebEx and conduct tutorials/recitation/remedial online. Even though WebEx is new to him, his effort for trying is remarkable. He also takes the effort to recognise students and know their names which I believe is difficult as most things are done online. |
8. | He goes beyond the duties of being just a lecturer/tutor, by giving personal life advices to students through the sharing of his life experiences and lessons. Such action is commendable as these "off-the-book" lessons are very valuable and students want to learn more from lecturers and tutors apart from what is stated in the curriculum. Nonetheless, his method of delivery is very effective, especially since programming can be a very "dry" subject. |
9. | He is able to make the learning process both fun and interesting. He is also friendly and approachable both in and out of class. |
10. | He is easily one of the most inspiring lecturers I've ever come across. His lessons are meaningful, engaging and challenging. He is also humorous which helps when content gets dry. One of his best trait, though, is his ability to connect with students at a personal level and inspire us beyond academics. Compared to other iBLOC modules and lecturers, Dr Ben Leong stands out as an outstanding teacher and I strongly recommend him as a nominee for teaching awards. |
11. | He is such a great prof. Hands down. |
12. | He shares his personal life experiences with us. I think in addition to academia life experience is also important. Also shows his proficiency in class when solving problems. |
13. | Method of teaching is very effective. |
14. | One of the coolest teachers I've had in my life! He teaches with passion & interacts on a personal level. |
15. | PROF BEN IS VERY GOOD. with my experiences with lecturers, I think the ability to engage students is the most important and prof Ben has been excellent in this area. |
16. | Prof Ben is a committed teacher who goes out of his way to ensure his students master the concepts of programming. He is thoroughly engaging when he speaks, and always finds ways to motivate and inspire his students. |
17. | Prof Ben was a really great person and professor. Friendly, approachable, and dedicated to the module, Prof. Ben allowed us to interact through a platform, Coursemology. The platform was amazing in many ways. It allowed us to discuss online via forums, complete trainings / tutorials / recitations, where Prof Ben and his tutors often incorporate game and contest elements to make things even more interesting. Prof Ben oftens drops hints in the forum to students when they are stuck. The module was interesting. I began knowing nothing about programming, but Prof Ben, through his weekly recitations and lectures, funny and engaging examples, sparked interest in the topic. I found myself learning a lot throughout these few months. Somehow, I look forward to attending all CS1010 classes. Nearing the end of the course, Prof Ben gave a 2 hour lecture on life. The lecture was inspiring, and once again showed Prof Ben's dedication to teaching. After imparting numerous programming techniques to us, he finished by giving us applicable and useful life advice. He is a prof that truly deserves respect. |
18. | Prof Ben worked hard to ensure all of us could absorbed what we learnt. What he has done is especially precious and significant since most of us had no foundation in programming prior to this module. |
19. | Really passionate about teaching and is excellent in his teaching and developing students' potential. |
20. | This is my first module in NUS, as a non-graduating student, soon to be a undergraduate in August. I must say the experience that I had was a very positive one. Professor Ben Leong is a very dedicated teacher and his passion for teaching allows him to engage students easily and impart key concepts in a fun manner. Also, this encourages students to do their part, seeing that the teacher himself has put in so much effort for the class. One would be guilty for not doing well as the teacher has reached out to the students already (it takes two hands to clap). Students will work hard both for themselves and for the resources and time put in by the tutoring team. With a selfless teacher, the motivations to study and excel are beyond self, and the benefits are numerous and intangible. We can also see this, if compared to a teacher for example, who only aims to fulfill a certain key performance indicator. With his vision, he also also lead a very responsible, coherent and dedicated team of tutors for CS1010FC and made the overall experience extremely pleasant, and most importantly a great and memorable learning experience for myself. I have definitely not regretted signing up for this iMOOC module and I would recommend other students to sign up for CS1010FC. This is the first professor that I am under in NUS, I really hope that the upcoming professors that I will come across are equally dedicated and passionate about teaching. A big thank you to Professor Ben Leong. Cheers |
21. | Very committed to the program from the very first day! Singles out weaker students on his own initiatives and helps them. Always tries to accommodate students' interests and requests despite his inconvenience and troubles. Allowed a lot of flexibility for the iBLOCs which was very important in keeping students in the course, as many of us have external commitments due to not being full time students. |
22. | Very detailed in his explanations. I love the video lectures |
23. | Very enthu about his teachings and very genuine in things that he does. Obviously Enjoys what he does which I hope one day I could find what I truly love and enjoy doing it. |
24. | lessons are interesting and somewhat easy to understand. |
