Singapore (2000 - )

To form part of his memoirs...

After a year in INTI College Sarawak, Dennis Puk decided to broaden his narrow horizons by venturing overseas. He contemplated whether to head to Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore as these were the nearer destinations and therefore, more accessible. Various factors were taken into consideration, including the people, environment and culture, which were quite similar in nature to Sarawak.

Dennis Puk arrived in Singapore on 27 May 2000.

In Singapore, he currently stays in Tanglin Halt Road, in the Commonwealth area in a two-room rented place.

He attends St Andrew's Cathedral's 9:30 service at Victoria Concert Hall on Sundays. In the past year, he also sometimes attends the Church of Our Savior services at Queenstown.

What He Does...

Being poor, Dennis regularly reads the Straits Times, the Malaysian newspapers Star and The New Straits Times, and the Malaysian business weekly, the Edge Online via the web. Some of the online sites that he often accesses are Fortune, Fool Online, MPH Online, Amazon and others. Here is a listing of some of the sites he accesses in the course of work.

Besides work and study (taking up 80% of waking hours), he spends his time roaming around the concrete jungle of Singapore, a predator prowling for the elusive bargains like any typical Singaporean. Taking long bus rides has become a favourite pastime. Oh, since they switched to the Ezy-Link card, Dennis stopped taking long bus rides for obvious reasons. One thing notable about Singapore is that there are so many shopping complexes everywhere. Other than that, there isn't anything else much to do.

Lately, he has been very preoccupied with his course work and spending time in the work place. Thus, there was not much time to discover more about Singapore.

Places to go in Singapore include Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the National Museums, Sungai Buloh Nature Park, Pulau Ubin, and of course, the ubiquitous shopping malls in Orchard Road, Suntec City, Tampines, Jurong, and the various housing estates.

Nowadays, he seldom cooks. On the occasions that he does, he shops at NTUC Fairprice, IMM Giant, and the Tanglin Halt Wet Market. His specialities are chicken rice, braised duck, fried kuay teow, pasta and Sarawak Laksa. Sample photo of Dennis' Sarawak laksa. Dennis also enjoys curries and he has been doing some experimentation with egg omelettes.

Record of trips

Recently, boredom and monotony led him to Kuala Lumpur (27 – 29 July 2001). On his May 2000 trip, he brought some Singapore friends back with him. Returned to Sarawak in February 2002 for Chinese New Year. Went to Kuala Lumpur again in May 2002 with his CITA colleagues and returning to Sarawak for a short visit in June (this was for his friend, Patrick Then's wedding). In September 2002, he again made a trip back to Sarawak where he visited the world-famous Mulu caves together with two Singaporean colleagues. He went to Malacca in Dec 2002 braving the Hari Raya Aidilfitri jam. Stayed in a Peranakan style lodging in Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock in Malacca. Went back to Kuching in Jan 2003 in preparation of his impending wedding.
