Project Title : Interactive Software System for Berth Assignment
Project Description (Hon-part followed by MSc-part (if any)) :
(Honours-Project-Part) This project is about the design and implementation of an interactive software system, IBAPS, for dynamic re-assignment of berths to vessels in a container port. We assume that the system maintains a current assignment of berths to vessels for the next operation time period (say a day). These includes information on the length of the vessel, the arrival time, the length of stay of the vessel and so on. The IBAPS system receives, on the fly, requests for changes in the assignment and has to service these requests.
The IBAPS software system will include a (web-based?) GUI and an algorithmic engine that efficiently performs the dynamic re-assignment of berths to vessels. For this problem, we are interested in optimizing the use of berth space while minimizing the changes on the existing assignment. Experimental evaluation on on the effectiveness of our techniques will also be carried out.
(The-Optional-MSc-Part) This project can be extended to an MSc project. For the MSc part, we shall consider algorithms that incorporates substantial look-ahead that tries to trace the "ripple-effect" of a berth assignment. The result can then be used in designing better re-assignment algorithms that has look-ahead. In addition, the model can be extended to the case where the berthing period of vessels can be varied (slightly) to facilitate a more "global re-assignment" to improve berth utilization.
