Austria 2003

The primary objective of this trip was to visit the memorial sites and residences of the Austrian music composer, Gustav Mahler [1860-1911] that are located within Austria:

  • Vienna
  • Maiernigg (on Lake Wörthersee, near Klagenfurt)
  • Dobbiaco (in Italy, near Austrian border)
  • Steinbach (on Lake Attersee)
  • The secondary purpose was to attend some Mahler concerts. I timed this trip to coincide with the annual Salzburg Festival and attended two concerts:

  • Symphony no. 9 (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Riccardo Chailly)
  • Symphony no. 4 (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Pierre Boulez)
  • I was also lucky to be able to slot in another Mahler concert at Graz, which is one of the world-tour stops made by the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra . They performed Mahler's Symphony no. 5 under conductor Ingo Metzmacher. Graz was also the Cultural Capital of Europe for the year 2003.
