I flew Austrian Airlines from Singapore (00:15) to Vienna Airport (05:50) From the airport, and then transit (07:20) to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (09:10). I then bought a "Summer Tour" train ticket (which allows 3-out-of-10 non-consecutive days of unlimited train travel throughout Netherlands, and is available during Jul-Aug) at € 49 and set off to Maastricht (10:21 - 13:03). The single train journey from the airport to Maastricht would have cost € 26.60.
Maastricht is located at the southern tip of Netherlands, bordering with Belgium and Germany. It is the oldest town in Netherlands (a title mildly contested by another town named Nijmegen). It made world headlines in 1992, when signing of the Maastricht Treaty created the European Union.
The Maas River dissects the town into 2 sides. The train station is on the east, while the town centre is on the west. I stay at Crowne Plaza Hotel which is at the east side, at the river front.
I took some photos from the window of my hotel room. I had unknowingly mis-configured my camera's white-balance setting while I was taking a shot of the breakfast meal on the plane, so all the photos turn up bluish.
I visited the Natural History Museum, and bought a Museum Year Card there. This card costs € 30, and entitles free entrance to many museums throughout Netherlands for a year.
I then visited the tourist information centre and strolled around the town.
