We had a briefing, then took pictures on Friday, 3 July-1998, 11am.
Took pictures in CR (with my so-called famous "Benefits of SPD" slide),
on the S15-S17 bridge, and also in TM3 -- even pictures of
Xu Degui with his Koch curves (IC1101S-PS4).
Thanks to all who showed up for your support.

USRP -- All SPD students should sign up...
As part of the SPD, we are asking that students do a USRP
research project during their first year.
USRP stands for "Undergraduate Science Research Programme"
and it gives students an opportunity to do some research work
(under the guidance of lecturers) during their undergraduate years.
The USRP runs from Nov until around the following Aug and gives
our students two modules -- one modules will count towards their
degree requirements, the other will not, but will appear in their
transcript.
This year, the deadline for signing up for USRP was 06-Sept,
but was extended to 13-Sept.
I am holding a briefing session to all SPD students this
Saturday. Details are as follows:
- Date: Saturday, 6-Sept-1997
- Time: 11am - 12noon
- Place: Conference Room
- Topic & Agenda: Update on SPD -- Agenda
- Update on SPD
- The USRP and Timeline
- Problem Solving Lectures
- Q&A
All SPD students MUST attend the briefing...

SPD Confirmed List of Students
After yesterday meeting, and this morning's meeting for those
who want time to consider, I have now got the
confirmed list
of about 60 SPD students.
All students in this confirmed list
will all be automatically registered for IC1101S, although
it may take a little bit of time to do that and for it to
be reflected in the registration system.
If you see your name appearing in one of the IC1101(Java) tutorial
groups, don't be alarmed.
You can safely ignore it.
This IC1101(Java) grouping was done based on an older IC1101(Java) namelist
and your name was still in that list at the time.
I have the MOST UP TO DATE namelist for the SPD and IC1101S.
Tue, 22-July-1997 -- More Updates...
SPD and IC1101S Students must sign special form from me!
All students must complete and sign a special form,
before they can be officially added into IC1101S and/or the SPD.
IMPORTANT:
Students (including those in the
The SPD Invited List)
who do not sign this form
are automatically out of the SPD.
This form will be given out by Dr. Leong in the
Special Meeting on Wed 23-July-1997.
Fri, 18-July-1997 -- Updates...
Confirmed! -- Special Meeting on Wed, 23-July 5:30pm
Because of the big number of people in my waiting list
for the SPD, I WILL CALL a
SPECIAL MEETING; 5:30pm Wed, 23-July; @ Conf Room S15 04-31
to sort everything out.
Everyone who wants to be in either IC1101S and/or the SPD
MUST attend this SPECIAL MEETING.
SPD Programme meant to be Challenging -- Don't Misunderstand
Some students seem to misunderstand the purpose of the SPD.
Let me attempt to clarify.
The purpose of the SPD is not to give students more coaching
or to make life easier for students.
Rather, we want to give SPD students more a challenging programme to
prepare for R&D work in Year 2 and onwards (see details in the
tentative SPD programme).
Also, it is expected that the
SPD workload will be generally
higher than the normal workload.
Therefore, the SPD is targetted for our top students who
- can handle the additional workload,
- like more challenging problems,
- are interested in pursuing R&D.
IMPORTANT: Sat Briefing Session
Those of you who are
- in the SPD Invited List
